Visual arts, industrial design, communications design, art science and media sciences are taught here at the "Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig (HBK)". Currently 1200 students are registered here, which makes it the second largest art university in Germany (the largest being in Berlin).

The University of Art was founded in 1963, but it was based on earlier schools going back to a drawing institute that was started in 1841.
