Although the adjacent domes of Santa Maria di Loreto and Santissimo Nome di Maria make the two churches at first sight appear like twins, their construction occurred more than two centuries apart. Santa Maria di Loreto was built in 1507 over an older 15th century chapel. It has a beautiful octagonal interior plan and is considered Antonio da Sangallo's best work. Santissimo Nome di Maria was built in the 18th century by the French architect Antoine Derizet. The churches are located by Trajan's Column near Piazza di Venezia.
