The memorials at Bada Bagh are known as chatris in Hindi, or otherwise as cenotaphs. The earliest chatris are to Rawal Maharawal Jait Singh and his predecessor Devidas who reigned from 1470-1506. The newest is that of Jawahar Singh who was Maharawal at the time of Indian independence. Jawahar Singh’s chatri was left incomplete as his son died within a year of his accession to the throne which was considered a bad omen by the family. From then on the practice of building a valedictory memorial to the ruling clan has been discontinued. I lost track of whose cenotaphs is whose, but provide here images of the stone memorials that are inscribed and show the likeness of the nobility to whom it is dedicated. Thus, we are able to learn a little about how the nobility may have appeared and lived their lives. The images note, for example, the pride in horsemanship and military strength, as well as, the family members associated with the individual. In some cases, the rawal appears to have only one devoted wife of significant size relative to his own stone image, while in other cases, a rawal appears adjacent to an entire harem of comparatively lessor stature and significance. Father and son combinations are also a frequent spacial theme in the organization of the chatri.
