This is the cheapest of the beaches in Burma. If you catch one of the early buses from Yangon, you can get there in about 5 hours. Another option, highly recommended if you can share, is to hire a taxi. The buses to Chaungtha beach are far from comfortable. If you miss the bus, you can take one to Pathein and go from there the next day.

The beach itself is ok but not super. Its biggest attraction is the short (-isch) distance to Yangon and the fact that hotel-/guesthouse prices are lower then nearby Silver Beach (Ngwe Saung). The beach has very little shade so during the hottest hours of the day the beach is virtually deserted. During the rest of the day you can see Burmese families, young couples, kids & teenagers all fully clothed bathing, floating in big tires, play football and other games. Later in the afternoon, there are also trips on horseback available.

A nice little trip is to take the boat to White Sand Island. The boat leaves several times a day to this tiny island that has absolute no sand. When you step of the boat (into the water sometimes since the boat doesn?t always manage to get to the small ?jetty?). And set foot on the island, you think it is made up of shells and think nothing of it. At least, I didn?t. Until I stood still a little longer and suddenly I saw many shells moving? There is a little stupa on the island. And the whole total of 3 trees.
