You can actually walk through the old water path of one of the unused locks in the Erie Canal.
Lock 29 is not in service anymore and has been turned into an attraction at the center of Aqueduct Park. There are picnic areas and a pavilion and some nice hiking and birding trails where you can spend a comfortable couple of hours enjoying the scenery.
And when you are tired of walking through a dry lock you can go right down the road and see an active lock, Lock 30.

to get there:
take route 31 to Walworth Road, then north on Walworth Road to Quaker Road and look for the signs
