The pool in which the Golden Temple stands in the middle of is called the Amrit Sarovar which means "Pool of Nectar" and it's from this that the city of Amritsar takes it's name. It was built in 1577, before the Golden Temple, by Ram Das who was the fourth Sikh guru and is where Sikh's are baptised.
