Named after the French explorer, the city of Marquette developed as an important port on Lake Superior. The abundant iron ore that has always been part of the local economy is still shipped today. The dedicated dock is a distinctive landmark of Markette shoreline.
The city features several old brick buildings and is a quiet nice place to be for residents and students attending the Northern Michigan University.
East of the city, near Beaver Grove, it takes to wait until early May or so for the last chunks of ice to melt off. At the end of April, strange sand formations mixed with ice caught our attention. Ice and snow are common companions here for most part of the year. This is one among the areas within the entire US to get the most yearly snowfall average.
Driving northwest from here, through Houghton, a sign in Keewenaw county shows that the average season snowfall in the last 50 years is some 20 ft. (over 6 meters) with a record of 32.5 ft (almost 10 meters).
