I stopped into Old Fishermans Grotto one Tuesday evening after the Alvarado Street Farmers Market. Just before stopping at the outdoor chowda stand, I saw a mother otter with her young pup, fishing, breaking the shells, and feeding the youngster.
Old Fishermans Grotto has been named Monterey County's best clam chowder three years in a row by the Monterey County Weekly. The chowda was tasty and smooth, but I'd be surprised if those readers that voted for this chowder ever tried Phil's in Moss Landing. I can believe this is the best chowder on the wharf, but there are other chowders in town that compare favorably.
A small (16 oz) bowl of chowder is $6, with a sourdough bread bowl is $7.
Old Fishermans Grotto is one of the oldest restaurants on the touristy wharf, having opened in 1950, and it's still owned by the same family. Besides the chowder stand in front of the restaurant, there is a full-service sit down restaurant indoors. Open daily 11am to 10 pm.
you can even order their chowder online!
