Part of the elaborate el-Ghouri complex, the Mausoleum of el-Ghouri was built in 1505 AD. It also contained a sabil (water fountain) and a commercial area for silk merchants. Although built by el-Ghouri, only members of his family were buried here. His body was never recovered when he died fighting the Ottomans near Aleppo. The mausoleum once had a grand dome which collapsed and was never rebuilt, even during the most recent carefully executed restoration. Today, the Mausoleum serves as a cultural and educational centre. As an aside, the narrow covered passage between the Mausoleum and the Madrassa el-Ghouriyya was often the subject of 19th century orientalist paintings.
