Salamanca has a crime risk rating well above average for a city in New York State.
Non-violent crimes are not the issue (which is fortunate for tourists) but theft is prevelant.
One in every 300 residents in Salamanca has been a victim of some type of theft every year.
There are only 6 registered sex offenders in the area which is minimal for the size of the population.

So, take a page from the Salamanca police website and do the following:
Lock your car doors... always.
Keep valuables locked away and out of sight.
Have a car alarm installed if possible.
Lock the motel room door at night and use the peephole and the latch-chain.
Keep an eye on the children (if they travel with you) and teach them safety about strangers.
