Het Schip, Amsterdam: 5 reviews and 12 photos

When Han suggested we visit the Museum Het Schip - The Amsterdam School I naturally thought it was an actual old school we were visiting. In actual fact Amsterdam School refers to a concept of artistic architectural style in the early 20th centuary. The most noted Amsterdam School architects were Michel De Klerk, Jo van der Mey and Piet Kramer.

The Museum Het Schip & surrounding buildings were designed by architect Michel De Klerk whose style was definetly unusual & heavily critisised.

We decided to take a guided tour of these Michel de Klerk designed residential homes for the poorer "working class". The building "Het Schip" is still used as a housing association although the people living there are not completely proverty stricken. This building was designed in 1917 and built between 1918 & 1921 it was common for the large families to have several children in one room.

The guided tour is all in dutch, worthwhile if you have a friend to translate otherwise buy a brochure in your language of choice & discover the details for yourself.

The cost of a guided tour is Euro2.50 with entrance fee Euro 5 (free with museum card)
The exhibition is in French, English, Spanish & Italian & is on PC's.
Opening hours Wed - Sun 1-5pm

I have taken several photo's of the various buildings so in the next few tips I will give a brief explanation.
