The acclaimed Latvian sculptor Karlis Zale and achitect Ernest Stalbergs statue designed in 1930 - 1935 was erected to the Fatherland and Freedom, as the text chiselled in the stone shows. It was funded from peoples donations. The 42 meters tall statues composition is formed by placing sculptural groupsat several levels and gradually increasing their emotional impact. The tall obelisk is crowned by the symbol of freedom - a woman holding three stars in her out-streched arms high above her head. These stars symbolize the three historical regions of Latvia: Kruzeme, Vidzerne and Latgale.
