Without doubt Mont St-Michel is an impressive sight but also without doubt there are far too many visitors visiting for my liking!
We drove merrily along nice, little country roads catching the ocassional glimpse of Mont St-Michel. This was our first visit here and we were really looking forward to it - especially as we had been to St. Michael's Mount in Cornwall, UK. Eventually, rounding the corner we came to a stop and ahead of us was a long, long line of non moving traffic. In the heat of the day we sat in the car moving slowly forwards, bit by bit by bit. After a very very long time we came to the car park (and let me just add that at no point was there a possiblity of turning the car around!). In 2005 the (enormous) car park was 4euros and you cannot believe the amount of cars crammed in there.... somebody is making a pretty fortune! After you've parked (that is assuming you've driven) you can then trek along the road to Mont St-Michel (at last!)
The crowds at Mont St-Michel were not funny. We couldn't move. It was a swollen mass of bodies and becoming part of it we were simply crushed, trodden on and moved along with no alternative. The narrow lanes with their olde world cast iron signs are most attractive but far from enjoyable due to large crowds.
We weren't able to go up to and into the Abbaye because the queues were beyond ridiculous and we were getting a bit narked!
We did buy some over-priced (but nice) ice-cream and then left the sweating, swarming masses to go and have a clamber on the ramparts and a mooch on the sand. We watched a seal very half-heartedly playing in the water there.
Am pleased to have seen Mont St-Michel even if I didn't much enjoy the experience!
