The Forbidden City. Need I say more except to try and avoid the crowds. Among the things you can do to get some peace and quiet are :
1. Enter through the northern gate, Shenwumen, instead of Tiananmen or Wumen to be precise, as Tiananmen is just a gate that leads to Wumen;
2. Visit the side palaces instead of just the big halls in the middle;
3. Go as early as you can. Check the opening times as they may differ according to the seasons.
4. Avoid weekends or public holidays

This way you may be able to get an inkling of what it must have felt like being an inhabitant of this expansive palace. Unfortunately, there is no way to avoid the flag waving, cap wearing multitudes of tour groups being shepherded through this complex.
