Arts Unique, Marahau, Abel Tasman Nat. Park: "The Most Unique Carvings and Maori Jewellery" Nelson/Tasman Shopping Tip by Kakapo2

It is something between shopping and attraction, a point of interest and thing to do in many respects. The "Arts Unique" gallery in Marahau, the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park, is definitely worth a visit, if you think of buying a huge wooden statue, a smaller carved item or a piece of Maori design jewellery.
A tree trunk with face caught my interest when I came back to Marahau from the Coastal Walkway, and so I crossed the road and had a closer look. You are invited to stroll through the sculpture garden of the property which is a kind of open-air gallery, with huge carvings, from figures to wakas (Maori canoe) and oversized animals. There are even wooden figures staring through the windows of a rusting bus.
You will find information panels about the artists and Maori legends next to the artworks, so a stroll through the sculpture garden becomes a special experience.
I also liked the shoes in the garden used as flower pots... ;-)
In the adjacent shop you can buy smaller items made of wood and bone. Or just have a look there as well.
They also have an online shop.
Directions: At the end of the town, on the left side of the road, right before the start of the Coastal Track (Abel Tasman National Park), opposite the Park Café.
