Going on an airplane tour is a good way to enjoy the beauty of Hawaii, but is decidedly not cheap (though it is half the price of a helicopter tour). I went with a company called Island Hoppers.

Trying to select only five photos to include with the tip is an exercise in itself, as I have lots and lots of good photos to choose from. There were only four of us in the plane, including the pilot. I sat next to the pilot. I quickly realized the seat behind the pilot was probably the best seat, and sitting next to the pilot is the next best seat. We went around the island counter-clockwise, so most of the views were to the left. This is why the seat behind the pilot is the best for photo opportunities. But being able to have a clear view out the front is cool too...just not as many photo opportunities.

One nit-pick: the pilot told us tipping is "not required but appreciated," and started discussing how pilots made less money than waiters. How's that for subtlety? :)

Tours depart Kona Airport daily at 7AM, 10AM, 1PM, and 4PM. There is also a "volcano sunset" tour departing at 4PM.

As of April 2007, The regular price of the volcano circle tour is $298.96, including tax. If you book online, you can get a discount of up to $35 per person. I received a significant discount booking through a travel agency at my hotel; I "only" paid $220.
