Federal Hall was once located on 26 Wall Street. Originally it was built as the City Hall. The building was remodelled and enlarged and made into the first capitol of the US. The first congress met here in the new Federal Hall, wrote the Bill of Rights and inaugurated George Washington as the first US president. When the capitol moved to Philadelphia, the building housed the city government again. The whole building was demolished in the 19th century and replaced by the current structure. This was the first United States Customs House. When this was moved to 55 Wall Street, the building became the US Sub-Treasury. Millions of dollars of gold and silver were held in the vaults in the basement, until the Federal Reserve Bank replaced the whole sub-treasury system in 1920.
