William Armstrong's magnificent estate, belonging to his house Cragside, can be driven round to enable you to discover and enjoy it fully. There are parking areas dotted about, so you can stop and start wherever takes your fancy. With over 40 miles of paths and trails hidden amongst seven million trees, you could be there all day and still not have done everything!

You have to drive through an archway of the house to access the estate and in a motorhome, it's a tight fit. The estate road is narrow but mainly one way, so once you have started, there is no going back. I think it's about 7 miles all the way round.

You can visit the thatched boat house and Nelly's Labrinth which is a maze of paths leading off through the rhododendrons with tunnels carved through the roots. Great fun, if you don't get lost! There are also a couple of lakes near here and an adventure playground. Also along the way is the trim trail which is a series of fitness and agility courses, great for children and adults alike. It's just a fascinating place and really,(and disappointingly) in the time you have to visit the house, gardens and estate, you can't possibly see everything. For those who belong to the National Trust, entry is free so they could make a few visits. Otherwise, for just the gardens and estate, it's a hefty 18.70 for a family (that includes a gift aid donation and NOT entrance to the house. That's extra.)

Open 10.30am - 5.30pm Mar. - Nov. 11am - 4pm Nov - Dec.
No access 1 hour before closing.
