Gallery openings abound on the first Friday of each month in the up and coming art and restaurant scene in Chinatown. This once seedy part of town is slowly becoming a hip spot with various art galleries and restaurants opening in recent years. The galleries highlight local artists and often provide free refreshments. Everyone is very friendly and there are many interesting folks to talk to. It really is a great people watching event. There are also live bands playing everything from jazz to Hawaiian and a small arts and crafts mart on Nuuanu south of Beretania.

The main concentration of galleries is in the area bordered by Smith on the west, King on the south, Nuuanu on the east, and Beretania on the north.
