The Crypt requires a special admission ticket obtained at the Maison de la Crypte across the street from the South Porch and slightly to the East.(Fee.) (See pictures in our Travelog "Walk around the Church"). The Crypt dates in part from before the early 11C and is the largest in France. It is said to have Druidic origins. There were additions to the crypt in the 13C to reinforce the foundations of the present Cathedral. There is also a functional church down here named Notre Dame de Sous-Terre much frequented by pilgrims who come to worship the Madonna and her camisole. The Madonna figure behind the Altar is an object of reverence as well and was replaced in the 19C with one of greater "spirit". There are several ancient items in the crypt and religious "sites". We picture the Altar, the prayer nave beyond it, the original statue on the South Tower that held the sundial, some of the original column statues and a piece of a colored, bas-relief incised tympanum from the previous Catheral. There is even more to see if you have time.
