There are 3 train companies that operate services to Edinburgh.

GNER have services that run from London Kings Cross up the East coast with a journey time of just over 4 hours. Occasional services continue onto Glasgow Central via Motherwell.

Virgin Trains run services South down the West coast to numerous English cities with trains to London Euston taking just over 5 hours. See Timetables for full details. Virgin Trains is a company that is co-owned by Virgin and Stagecoach with the latter offering very cheap fares on it Megatrain website (these are on limited routes).

Scotrail provides all of the local trains to points North and West of Edinburgh. They also run the Caledonian Sleeper service that has Bargain Berths from as little as 19 single, to & from London Euston.

As the going says, it pays to shop around and I often combine tickets to get up and down the country cheaply. For example, if there are no cheap fares to Edinburgh then try selecting Carlisle on Virgin then complete the journey with a bargain fare from Megatrain. This may involve a bit of waiting for your connection but there are well maintained waiting rooms in the station or several bars & coffee shops in the near vicinity.
