Favorite thing: Located in Stanley Park, the Vancouver Aquarium is an educational centre and one of the most impressive aquariums in North America. Don't expect a glitzy Sea World type theme park geared for little kids. It's a well-respected aquarium geared for all ages. It's home to beluga whales, sharks, otters, tropical fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, sloths, dolphins, seals, a Pacific Canada exhibit, an Amazon exhibit, a freshwater exhibit and an Arctic Canada exhibit. If this is your first time to Vancouver, by all means spend an hour or two here! Unlike some aquariums around the world which function only as an aquatic zoo, the Vancouver Aquarium is special because it's also a marine animal rehabitation centre. This means that sick, adandoned or hurt creatures from local waters are moved into the aquarium temporarily until they are strong enough to go back into the wild. Most of this goes on "behind the scenes" - in the labs and aquariums that aren't open to the public. Saying that, if you call up the aquarium, you can generally plan a visit to the scientific's labs. More information is available on their website - www.vanaqua.org - including their admission rates and hours.
