Looking into the Second Beach Pool
by Carmanah

Second Beach Pool is likely the most scenic swimming pool in all of Vancouver. It's one of Vancouver's two beachside public swimming pools - the other one being located in Kitsilano.

Second Beach Pool is appropriately located at Second Beach, which is the large waterfront park at the south-western entrance to Stanley Park. The pool overlooks English Bay. You can easily access the pool by walking down along the seawall towards Stanley Park, or by driving counter-clockwise all the way along Stanley Park Drive with Second Beach being one of the last stops.

Second Beach Pool used to be a salt-water swimming pool for decades, until people started to consider it a health issue. It is now a 100% a chloronated swimming pool, set at 27 degrees Celsius without any sea water pumped in. Only the seawall separates the pool from the ocean water, providing an alternate place to swim on a hot summer's day.

Because the pool is completed fenced in, it makes it an ideal attraction for families and young kids. Most people that use this pool are doing so for recreational purposes - it's not as much of a sports facility like other pools in Vancouver. The shape of the pool is round. Its lanes are 50m in length. It varies in depth between 0 and 5 feet. It's like a merge between a wading pool and a swimming pool. There are 3 slides in the pool, but no diving is allowed. Generally it's a very family-oriented place.

In terms of facilities, the Second Beach Pool has changing rooms, shower facilities, washrooms, and a lot of patio space for sunbathing. Nearby the pool is a large playground for children, Second Beach for beachcoming, BBQ pits, picnic tables, and a concession stand selling fish n chips, hamburgers, hotdogs, ice cream, candy, snacks and drinks.

If you have kids and want to entertain them for an afternoon, the Second Beach Pool would be ideal. Equally, if you want a cleaner swimming experience in addition to a beachside environment, the Second Beach Pool would be well worth a visit!
