Located on the main road running through Ipanema, Rua Visconde de Piraja, this church was built in 1918 and marked the beginning of Ipanema's urbanisation. The building, in Neo-romanic style, was designed by architect Professor Gastao Bahiana. The stained glass windows come from Germany and the Patron Saint icon (Our Lady of Peace) was donated by the French government, as a celebration of the end of WWII. The church has been a peace symbol for the citizens of Rio.
