The Indian Museum is housed in a splendid mansion built in 1880 which is typical of some of the houses in Botafogo. It is home to one of the most important archives of indigenous populations in Mesoamerica. The museum includes some 14,000 objects, 500,000 text documents, 16,000 publications specialised in native Indian ethnology, 50,000 images including photographs, files and videos and 200,000 recorded registers. In the garden is a mud hut known as a Ri' which was built by the Xavante Indians from Mato Grosso and an Une built by the Kuikuro from the Xingu Reserve in Mato Grosso.

Open: Tue-Fri 9am-5.30pm and Sun-Sat 1-5pm.
