Twyfelfontein Country Lodge: "Off the beaten track" Namibia Hotel Tip by Amlah

Our journey from Okaukuejo was pleasant until you reach Khorixas, then like a rollercoaster the road changes & seems to take an age to get anywhere! All this added to the Namibian experience & as long as you drive carefully, you should arrive in one piece (Good Luck!)
The Lodge was a lovely surprise in the middle of nowhere. Frequented mostly by what seemed to be coach tours, the rooms are basic yet comfortable. The thatched roof lodge main area is very impressive against the landscape & offers a beautiful restaurant area on the upper level with open views across the countryside. The food, albeit good value, was nothing to write home about, however the peaceful beauty of its surroundings did compensate for this.
Within 5km of the historic Twyfelfontein site, where you'll find the highest concentration of rock engravings in Southern Africa, a good base to explore - inc; Burnt Mountain, Organ Pipes & Petrified Forest - our favourite being the Organ Pipes.
Also in the area we came across http://www.francolinoflyins.com/ - This is run by Wolfgang & Francesca. They have set up a small intimate lodging with amazing igloo-type units, outdoor showers & breathtaking views. Here we took a scenic flight to: Doros, Gai Ais and Skeleton Coast in a 3 seater aircraft. What an amazing experience - landing in the middle of nowhere, taking in the peacefulness of the whole area and then watching as Wolfgang literally lifted & wheeled the plane around to face the gravel runway he had painstaking fashioned from the surrounding material. This is something that will be in my memory forever.
Wolfgang & Francesca also offer balloon & microlight flights - & with their amazing hospitality, definitely a place I would recommend.
During our stay we also took a nature drive in search of the 'elusive' desert elephants, but unfortunately they were hiding. The drive was very exhilarating as we raced alongside ostrich and later took a sundowner on an elevated mound, as we watched the sun go down.
Unique Qualities: Open-sided restaurant
Thatched lodge and surroundings
