Tommy's Joynt is hard to miss from the street. Garishly painted in American Red, White, and Blue, it's also located at the important junction of Van Ness and Geary. The inside is decorated as wildly as the outside. The place is essentially a bar with cafeteria style service, and the food is sort of German-American Hofbrau style--hand carved sandwiches of pastrami, corned beef, roast beef, barbequed beef, and turkey, as well as sloppy joe's and hot dogs. There's a full bar and world-wide collection of beers. But, the most famous food here are the Buffalo Chili and Stew. The place opened in 1947 and is famous among San Francisco locals, though the food is perhaps a bit dated in terms of style. While not the cheapest, this is one of the cheaper places to eat in the city. It's a reasonable option after a pop concert or movie theatre in the area. The bar is open 10am to 1:45am, restaurant 11am to 1:45am.

Favorite Dish: For a quick late night snack after the theatre or concert, the sandwiches are OK, as are the buffalo chili or stew with an Irish Coffee.
