  Mosque in Chiang Rai
by mim95

This is the oldest building and the first mosque in Chiang Rai city. Interesting enough, the name of the mosque is written in 3 languages: Thai, Arabic and Chinese. The Chinese name simply says "Chiang Rai Mosque".

There seems to be a larger population of Muslims in the northern provinces. Many are the descendents of Yunnanese (Chinese) traders who frequently travelled in the mountainous areas in China, Burma, Laos and Thailand for ceunturies. Some of them settled in Thailand, especially after the defeat of the Kuomintang (KMT) or the Nationalist in China in 1949. One scholar estimated that there is about 10,000 Yunnanese Muslims living in northern Thailand.

The mosque was closed when I passed by in the afternoon. It is likely opened in the early morning hours for prayers. And you should be properly dressed to enter the mosque, although I'm not sure if it welcomes non-Muslims.

Directions: On Issaraphap Road, just north of the restaurant street (Banphaprakan Road)
