The traveler is urged to use caution when considering any type of accommodation in Greece with the designation "Hotel". According to the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) the designation "Hotel" may only be used by establishments that meet certain criteria. Moreover, each locale may have its own Hoteliers association where legitimate hotels are members. The Milos Hoteliers Association includes 30 hotel members by my last count. The website that includes all hotel members of the Hoteliers Association of Milos is www.milos-hotels.org.
In Milos in particular, there is extensive abuse of the term "Hotel" by establishments that, while clean and comfortable by themselves, do not qualify for and thus have not earned the official designation "Hotel" by the GNTO. Such an establishment may in itself be approved by the GNTO to operate as "Rooms for Rent", but call itself a "Hotel", an unearned distinction which constitutes violation of applicable laws.
Unique Qualities: Several establishments carry the distinction "Hotel Apartments" as they are Hotel-class establishments offering furnished studios or apartments instead of the common hotel double room. Such lodging facilities normally include fully-featured kitchenettes, but they do not provide breakfast.
In Milos and most Greek islands that size in particular, do not expect the Ritz-Carlton. There are no gyms or large recreational areas, no ballrooms, hardly any tennis courts or swimming pools, no laundry service, room service is nonexistent (in their websites they often confuse "room service" with their once-every-three-days maid service) some hotels do not even include a functional phone in the room, and business office facilities means the owner will let you use his personal PC or fax machine upon request.
You can expect most hotels in Milos, however, to include air-conditioning, a small fridge, a closet, a 13" color TV and a hair dryer, in addition to a clean, private bathroom with shower and 24/7 hot water. Most beds are twin size or slightly smaller than queen size. Most establishments offer a private balcony or patio, while some feature a communal terrace shared between 2 or more units. Maid service including new linen every 2-3 days is always included.
Americans are sometimes astonished to find towels provided are just 2 sizes (small and smaller) and are expected to be changed once every 2-3 days. At the same time, most Greek hotel proprietors find the widely acceptable American practice of leaving used towels on the floor offensive, even though no hamper is provided.
My advice to travelers is this: Think of finding lodging in Milos and most Greek islands as booking a hotel in the traditional sense, and you are bound to be disappointed. Think of it as going camping, and you'll be pleasantly surprised. :)
