"The Royal Shakespeare Company" Top 5 Page for this destination Royal Shakespeare Theatre Tip by Jenniflower

This is possibly one of/if not THE best known, theatre company in the world!

They have a fourteen-acre site, on the River Avon, with Bancroft Gardens on the one side, and there won gardens on the other. It is a beautiful setting, perfect for the ambiance of the shows they have here.

The company has been performing in Stratford-upon-Avon since the 1800's, bringing the wonderful plays of William Shakespeare to life! It is an iconic theatre, and if you can attend one of their shows, do! :)

Charles Edward Flower was the person responsible for starting the theatre in 1875. He came from a family of brewers, and the Flower family (love the name!) have been constant supporters of it ever since.

The original Memorial Theatre was a Victorian Gothic building in style, but unfortunately it burn down in 1926. It's first performance had been 'Much Ado About Nothing' in 1879.

The theatre was rebuilt and opened in 1932 by the Prince of Wales.

Vivien Leigh, Richard Burton and Laurence Olivier are but three of the well known names to have starred in plays here!

Peter Hall started the modern Royal Shakepeare Company in 1960, and it has gone from strength to strength since then. They started including modern work and classics, alongside its infamous Shakespeare plays.

*We love the theatre and have seen mnay productions in the West End as well as in smaller theatres throughout Greater London.

Our little talented cousin Charlotte (8 yrs) is currently in the Evita West-End production here in London, unfortunately no complimentary tickets there though!
