This is a classic hotel in Kathmandu. It used to be on the outskirts of Kathmandu, now it's on the outskirts of the bustling centre - all the space that used to be field is eaten up by housing development. Still, Vajra is a secluded sanctuary with a variety of architectural styles and forms built around a courtyard. Coming back from a trek or on a group travel this is an ideal hotel. For the meditating visitor who wants quiet and seclusion, space and quiet for reading etc. Vajra is super. The place is an architectural wonder.
There is a bit of a walk into town, across the river and up narrow lanes into Chhetrapati and Thamel. Coming back with armfuls of souvenirs, it's an ok taxi ride from town, and everybody knows the Vajra. It's a good address in town.

Vajra has meeting rroms, the

Unique Qualities: There is a nice flower garden, a gallery, the East West Library and a theatre stage. They offer a special deal for long-term guestswho are writers. artists and scholars.
The main restaurant is called The Explorer's Restaurant and while the food is not much beyond OK, the atmosphere and company here is excellent.
On top of the main building is the pagoda bar, good city views.
From the Sunset bar there is a great view across to Swayambunath stupa.
Rooms are a bit on the dark side as is traditional newar architecure, dark woods etc. Good beds, excellent rooms for the money.
