Crossing the Rialto Bridge, We have left SAN MARCO sestieri and are now in SAN POLO and SANTA CROCE sestieri.
This sestieri or neighbourhood is named after 2 churches within the boundaries.
Venices first inhabitants settled in this area, which consisted of small islands, called Rivus Altus or Rialto, which meant high bank.
Ruga degli Orefici is the thorough-fare leading down from the steps of the Rialto Bridge.
Originally, spices and other goods from 'The East' were sold here, and the market area gradually became established during the 11th century. It was the commercial hub of Venice, with many merchants, traders and money lenders plying their business.
Nowadays, its main trade is in tourist souvenirs, However it has managed to preserve some of its atmosphere.
When I visited this area on Christmas Day 06, the markets were closed, but it was quite pleasant to wander around.
UPDATE Christmas 07 and 08 this thoroughfare was buzzing when I visited during 23rd and 24th December, with lots of stalls selling nuts and dried fruits, clothing etc, it had a nicer atmosphere than my previous visit,
