"Maruia Falls (south-west of Murchison on SH 65)" West Coast Things to Do Tip by Kakapo2

West Coast Things to Do: 30 reviews and 93 photos

As those waterfalls are rather different to most others and there are no real nice rest areas along SH65 between Springs Junction and Murchison, they are worth well a stop - either for a picnic or just the falls or both.

The water of the Maruia River falls over a wide rock ridge and look like mini - and I really mean MINI - Niagara Falls. Not very high but very wide and with a lot of water.

From the rather big carpark you have to walk a short zig-zag path through native bush down to the river, and you hear bellbirds and silvereyes and other birds sing. There are picnic tables and seats down at the riverside and between the carpark and the toilet. There might be some sandflies around but nothing compared to the area further south between Lewis Pass/Maruia Springs and Maruia. The Maruia Falls are far more north than all those places with "Maruia" in the name.

Once we stopped at a very nice spot along the start of the Maruia River on SH7 between Lewis Pass and Springs Junction but there were millions of sandflies, so we fled and only stopped at Maruia Falls. That's how we first discovered them LOL

Directions: On SH65, probably 20/25 kms south of the junction with SH7 (Westport-Murchison).
