Bargetto Winery is located in Soquel in the Santa Cruz area, but they have a small store and tasting room on Cannery Row in Monterey. The shop is full of unique gifts such as dishes, clocks, and artwork all with a wine and grape motif. I visited when buying wine to present as gifts for friends, and they were very friendly. Wine tasting here is free, but I think they limit you to 3 or 4 samples (it's $5 for 6 samples at the other wine shop in the same building, called "A Taste of Monterey"). I tried both a gewurztraminer ($14/bottle) and a syrah ($16/bottle), and purchased a bottle of each. I was a little disappointed at the lack of general wine knowledge that the lady there had...I asked if she had a shiraz... she said no, but many people like the syrah. Once I got home and Googled it, I found out they are virtually the same wine.
The Bargetto Winery was officially founded in 1933, the year Prohibition ended, but they admit to making wine way back in 1919 and through the Prohibition years.
What to pay: Maybe $15-$20 a bottle, some fancy wines cost more.
