Good place for boat tours: Lake Mahinapua.

You can reach nice Lake Mahinapua directly from SH6, about 13kms south of Hokitika. There are nice views and a nice picnic area. I can only repeat it again and again: Have insect repellent handy if you want to relax there, so you can react quickly when the sandflies start their attacks and enjoy your time. Protected like this I once was even able to write a story at this peaceful spot.

But Lake Mahinapua offers a lot more joys and activities. Like nearly everywhere you can go for some walks, for example the Jum Michel and Bellbird Walks. Another track, the Mahinapua Walkway starts further north near Mananui and leads down to the eastern end of the lake.

Nearly half way between Hokitika and Lake Mahinapua, at the end of the Mahinapua Creek, you can go on a guided canoe tour or the old-fashioned Paddle Boat Cruise. Both tours start at the creek and lead to the lake.
