Portland in the mid-1800's was a large port town. Some travelers would come to the city's bars and brothels and meet a friendly stranger that would buy lots of drinks. The liquored up traveler would then be lead down stairs, sometimes even dropped down trap doors, into tunnels. People would then.....and I'm not making this up.....bring them onto ships and the drunken guy would wake up as a forced laborer on a ship. The tunnels were originally built by the Chinese to transport goods when the city was being built. There have been trap doors, even cells turning up during construction on parts of downtown. Needless to say, the city has not declared it as a historical landmark....or even existing

Part of the Tunnel was blocked off and made into a bar, (called 'The Shanghai Tunnel'). Not much but walls and ceiling are historical, but they make stiff drinks. The Shanghai Tunnel Bar is at: 211 SW Ankeny Street; tel: (503) 220-4001
