Mahamuni Paya

In Southwest Mandalay stands one of Mayanmar's more famous Buddhist sites; Mahamuni Paya, which was originally built by King Bodawpaya in 1784.
The paya's fame comes from its shrine centrepiece, the highly venerated Mahamuni Buddha image; an image of great age - even believed to date from a legendary visit by the Buddha in 554 BC.
The 4m-high seated image is cast in bronze, but over the years thousands of devout Buddhist have completely covered the figure in a 15cm-thick layer of gold leave.
Only Man are permitted to walk up to the Mahamunni image and apply gold leave.
