"Visit the Pak Ou Caves" Luang Prabang Things to Do Tip by saracen

To get to the caves you need to take a longboat from LPB, about 1 ½ hours upstream. There are loads of photo opportunities along the way, from wandering herds of buffalo to local fisherman casting their nets, to children playing on the riverbank.
There are 2 main sets of caves, the bottom ones readily accessible for able bodied people, up a few sets of stone stairs. The stairs have handrails, but it is still worth keeping a watchful mind in case you slip.
There tend to be lots of people around the bottom caves, mainly tourists jostling for position, but also old ladies selling caged birds to release, or flowers and joss sticks to give to the Buddhas - and there are literally thousands of them. Everywhere you look there are small and large Buddhas, some on ledges high above your head, many on natural shelves in the rock etc.
The views from the cave across the river are nice without being overly dramatic. Still, worth a few pics.
The upper caves are quite a trek up some, at times, steep steps. The upside, should you attempt it, is that there are less people who do come up so things shouldn’t be so busy.
Across the river from the caves are several tourist restaurants that serve decent, if entirely unremarkable meals. On the way back it is standard to stop off at several villages, each selling their own speciality whether it be locally produced paper products or weaving, or local moonshine…
