Founded by breakaway members of Sevilla FC in 1907 and given the royal seal seven years later, Real Balompié Betis won their first trophy 1926 when they lifted the Andalusian Cup. Their one and only Spanish league championship title arriving in 1935. Given their reputation as a workers' team, it is no surprise that Betis slipped into obscurity during the Franco era. The Verdiblancos - named after their green-and-white shirts - had a seven-year spell in the third division before returning to the top flight under the direction of club president Benito Villamarín. In 1964/65, Betis made their first foray into Europe in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. However, they had to wait a further 12 years to be able to test themselves again on the wider stage. This came after Betis had claimed their first Copa del Rey, with a victory over Athletic Club Bilbao on penalties in 1977. Relegation the next season was followed by an immediate return, and ten-year Primera División stay in the 1980s. However, this was followed by relegation in 1991 and near-fatal bankruptcy, only the intervention of then vice-president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera saving them from extinction. Things then began to look up and an amazing run of nine wins in ten end-of-season games saw Lorenzo Serra Ferrer's team promoted in 1994.
