Rano Rarako is a hill, a volcano having a lake in it's crater. It is also THE hill where all Moais were born (this makes it more famous). It is the birthplace of the Moais, "who" have been literally carved out of the Hill itself. This is also where you can find most of them, still being attached to the hill, or just laying on the hillside waiting to be transported or left behind. Legend says that some of them may have left behind due to the person who ordered them didn't like the result and didn't want to set it on his Ahu elsewhere on the island.
It's interesting that some of the Moai's are still in the progress of being carved. According to Heyerdahl when he arrived here there were still some hammers and other tools left behind, but people were not working on them at all...
You should spend a minimum of 3-4 hours to explore the whole area, both sides of the hills, the lake in the crater, most of the Moais and possibly climb to the top, the view is worth it!
Directions: See map attached as photo.
It can be best accessed from the paved road on the Southern side of the island, you need to take a dirt side-road inward to the island before Ahu Tongariki.
