Swaledale is famous for its sheep grazing on it higher slopes even in the worst weather. The main town in Swaledale is the medieval market town of Richmond with its beautiful castle. The castle was started in 1071. Richmond has tiny winding streets and a Georgian theatre It was built in 1788 (restored in 1962) and is the only surviving theatre of that age.
One place not to miss is Hardraw Force, which is England's highest single drop waterfall. It has a fall of 29 metres and the daredevil Blondin walked across it on a tightrope in Victorian times. Now it is possible to walk behind the waterfall without getting wet.

Wharfedale is gritstone moorland; it has three high peaks. These are well known for their potholes but it is an area loved by walkers. One of the most beautiful areas of the dale is around Bolton Abbey. The Augustinian monks built this abbey in 1154 on the site of a Saxon Manor and it was an extensive and very wealthy monastery
