We really enjoyed the day we spent in Bury - a lovely market town. St Edmund was the last Saxon kig of East Anglia and he was beheaded by the Danish raiders in 870. The legend is that his followers were led by a wolf to where the body was and they picked up the severed head. Edmund was canonised in 900 and buried in Bury. King Canute built an abbey there in his honour in the year 1014. The abbey, the richest in the land, was burnt down in 1347 - the ruins are in a garden in the town centre. The park around them is a lovely place to sit and rest and let the world go by for a little while. There is a market cross in Cornhill and near it the Moyse,s Hall which is a 12th century merchant's house. Today it houses the town museum, in the museum there are Iron Age exhibits which were found in West Stowe.
We visited the town on a wednesday and that is market day, I love looking around markets. There are several coffee shops in the centre of town.
