If you are crossing the Galata Bridge on your way to the Eminönü side, one of the most eye-catching sights you will see is Yeni Camii, also called the New Mosque. It's sort of an amusing name to visitors when they find out that the "New" Mosque is almost 350 years old! :) It was actually first commissioned in 1597 by the mother of Sultan Mehmet III, Valide Safiye. After the Sultan's death in 1603, work on the mosque was stopped. Construction of the mosque did not continue again until 6 Sultan's later when Mehmet IV came to power. His mother, Valide Turhan Hadice, had the mosque recommissioned, and it was completed in 1663. The full name of the mosque is quite appropriately Yeni Valide Camii, or the "New Queen Mother's Mosque". With it's main dome surrounded by several smaller domes, and two towering minarets, the mosque's unique exterior indeed is a standout along the Eminönü shore of the Golden Horn. Inside of the mosque, there is beautifully decorated ceramic tiles all along the columns, walls & ceilings, and several chandeliers hang from above, illuminating the prayer rooms. Also on the grounds are the gravesites of of 4 sultans, including Mehmet IV, along with his mother, Valide Turhan Hadice.

Directions: Located in Eminönü, where the Galata Bridge crosses the Golden Horn
