  Domes of Khan al-Sadraniyeh

The souks of Damascus are dotted with many Khans. A khan is a caravanserai, part warehouse for trade merchandise arriving in Damascus, and part inn for the merchants, and many were constructed in Damascus following its tradition as a final stop on the caravan trade routes. Most of the existing structures date from the Ottoman period, though the practice existed well before. The most famous Khan is Assad Pacha Khan in Souk al-Bzouriyeh. Most khans are multi-domed structures, sometimes with a spacious courtyard, and are still in use as shops or warehouses to this day. The attached photograph shows the triple domes of Khan al-Sadraniyeh, an 18th century structure located near Azem Palace, at the northern end of Souk el-Bzouriyeh.
