"Warning: Death Risk" Stubaier Alpen Things to Do Tip by nmcanada

Stubaier Alpen Things to Do: 21 reviews and 22 photos

A young Canadian died on the slopes of Stubaier when he fell into a crevice. Ski resort staff did not search for him at the end of the day when he did not return his rented equipment or remove his parked car, and local police dismissed the case. His body did not appear until 14 years later when the ice melted. The body had been lacerated by the slope's grooming equipment, which suggests the young man had been alive after his fall and had been able to climb up the crevice; but since the resort had refused to look for him, he was killed by the machinery. Both the resort and the police refused to do formal searches for him. There has never been a formal investigation, and police shrug off their responsibilities. Ski resorts in this region will go to great lengths to dodge liability and responsibility, and police passively support them, because tourism is big business. Safety standards are low, and accidents of this sort are expected. Ultimately, your safety is your own concern - don't expect help at the professional level you are used to in your home country. Always ski, hike, and snowboard with friends, and let family know if and when you are going up to Stubaier.
