Easter Island Things to Do: 305 reviews and 698 photos
One of the most famous and largest Ahu of all, with 15 Moais reinstated on the platform. It is really impressive with the sea very close behind them and Poike being on the left side with its "walls" to the ocean. Rano Raraku (the birthplace of the Moais) is right behind you if you are looking at them. Due to the vicinity of the Quarry and the large plain area (where you can move these large statues easier) the largest Moais were erected here.
In 1960 a massive tidal wave (tsunami) generated by an earthquake off the cost of Chile hit the Ahu and destroyed the platform sweeping the pieces of the knocked down moais inland all over the place. They were reerected between 1992 and 1997 by a team from Japan under the supervision of a Chilean archeologist, so now all 15 of them stand proudly looking inland.
Directions: See map attached as photo.
It is located on the Southern cost of the island, if you take the "main" road, it will take you right to it, after you pass Rano Raraku, it will be on the right side. The road goes around it.
