"Viljandi folk music festival" Estonia Things to Do Tip by Miisu

Estonia Things to Do: 147 reviews and 168 photos

Viljandi is a lovely town in South-Estonia with a beautiful lake with sandy beach suitable for swimming, lots of greenery, ruins of an old castle and a catchy location on the hill. You?ll see scenic views from the castle ruins.

There aren?t many important sights in Viljandi, but once in year this place attracts lots of Estonian people who take their tents and music instruments and gather there to take part of the Folk Music Festival (known as simply Viljandi folk). If you like folk music buy the pass of the festival and visit numerous concerts in the ruins of medieval castle given by various international artists. If you don?t like folk music, then just take your guitar or jews? harp, sit down on a green hill, jam with local bohemian crowd and enjoy the atmosphere.

The faestival takes place in the end of July. Keep your eye on this website: http://www.folk.ee/english

Directions: Take a bus from Tallinn?s main bus station (there is one bus in every hour and it takes about 2 hours. You can also take the train from Balti jaam in Tallinn, but the railway station in Viljandi is a longer walk from the town centre than the bus station.
