Now how to “classify” Worms as a destination ? Is it more things-to-do or more off path ? But as I have decided to turn my tips upside down and lead you with “Things to do in Germany” more to the lesser known places, you find it here.

Worms was of much importance during the Holy Roman Empire. A lot of disputes and decisions took place here, and it was also here, where Luther was banished from the church (with Worms Edict). The Imperial Cathedral holds treasures such as a baroque high choir by Balthasar Neumann and many other architectural delights.

And of course, the Nibelungs! Who likes old sagas and legends, will surely have heard of Siegfried and Kriemhild and sinister Hagen, who dumped the legendary gold treasure into the Rhine River. It was (said to be) here, where most of the parts of Nibelung Saga did take place, and the city officials do their best to reveal all this on a walk through this nice town. And of course, in ultra-modern Nibelung Museum you can listen to the saga, told by the anonymous poet of the legend.

The town has more to offer: museums and old churches and a very interesting church a bit out of town, surrounded by vineyards.

It is better to visit it in summer. Then the street cafes are full with people and delicious local dishes are being served, and you could also go out for some sunbathing at the beach – yes a little artificial beach has been set on the Rhine.
In winter, it tends to be a bit dull, but still charming, as without the many visitors you sometimes might have the idea of being in the middle of medieval times.

It is located in the vicinity of Heidelberg, so definitely worth a visit.
