There are several Ahus on the East side of the island, very close to the road, but Ahu Akahanga is a little bit more special than the others. It's relatively easy to spot it from the road as there is a bigger parking area in front of it, and chances are there are a few souvenir sellers present during the daytime as well.
Between the parking area and the actual Ahu you can find ruins of the foundation and stone terraces of old houses where the locals used to live. The Ahu is full of knocked-down, face down Moais. The top of the platform here was decorated by sculptures of the same red stone as the hats of each Moai.
On the ocean side of the Ahu you can find a small Moai which is put on another stone. According to the "legend," it was prepared to be transported away by a European ship, but they never managed to put it on board. It is lying face up to the sky and you can walk around it, it's unique.
There is also a larger Moai laying on the hillside and you can find a small cave in the area as well.
Directions: See map attached as photo.
Take the road on the east side of the island, it will be on your right side at about half way to Rano Raraku.
