The square was originally called Paradeplatz before 1864, then Schillerplatz and from 1900 Hauptwache.

The Hauptwache building was built in 1729/30. Until 1866 Frankfurt was its own souvereignity and the building housed the city?s army and a prison. After the annection by Prussia the prison stayed and it became a police station, but already in 1904 the building was converted to be a café.
